Do you believe in magic? Even though magic is usually relegated to comic books and fairy tales, there are people out there that think magic must exist. Why do people feel this way? In many cases, it’s because people saw an incredible trick in action.
Every Magician Has Secrets
It isn’t easy to be a professional magician. While there are people that make a little bit of money performing at birthday parties and other events, the people that are able to play major events are incredible at what they do. They work hard to develop tricks, and they work to keep the secrets behind their tricks close to their chests.
A magician’s tricks are part of their livelihood, which is why magicians typically don’t want to reveal how they do what they do. Revealing the secrets behind a trick won’t just take away some of the mystique from a magician’s act. When a magician gives away a trick, other performers can copy that trick. Companies tend to keep their formulas secret, and magicians don’t want to reveal their tricks for similar reasons.
When We Can Explain Something, It’s Not Magic Anymore
We use the word “magic” to describe things that we don’t have an explanation for. A lot of the things that we can do today might be referred to as magic by people from the past. Heating food in a microwave might seem perfectly normal to a modern person, but to someone from the past, it might seem like witchcraft.
People that perform tricks do have explanations, even if they don’t explain their tricks to the general public. The things that they do might seem like they are magical, but there is a logical explanation for every trick that you see.
Tricks Are Designed To Be Deceptive
When you watch a magician, a ventriloquist, or a mentalist do something, it usually looks like it has to be magic. It’s important to remember that you’re watching literal tricks. The performer is working to deceive you into thinking that something else is happening.
Magicians generally try to misdirect the audience. For example, a performer might get people to focus on their hands when they are actually doing something with their feet. A magician is trying to fool you, and if you believed that their trick was magic, then they succeeded.
There Are All Kinds Of Performers And Tricks
Not all magicians perform the same kinds of tricks. For example, mentalists are typically focused on tricks that make it look like they can read people’s minds. Some performers, like Penn & Teller, include vaudeville-style tricks in their acts. Others use elaborate props to put on an incredible show. Because there is so much variety out there, it can be hard to get to the bottom of any one trick.
As far as we know, there is no such thing as magic. However, there are a lot of people out there that can make it look like they’re doing something magical. If you’ve seen an amazing trick, and you’d like to find out how it was done, you should start researching magicians, mentalists, and other performers.
